Advanced Mirror Technologies for Space-based Applications

Speaker: James T. Mooney, Harris

 

Harris has a strong heritage of providing high precision, lightweight mirrors for spac eand ground based applications.  This presentation will review the types of space-based optical systems that have been supported by Harris, the current optical fabrication and testing capabilities at Harris, and the technical advancements that will be needed to meet the needs of next generation space-based optical systems. 

 

Dr. Ted Mooney is the Chief Engineer and OF&T Engineering Manager for Precision Optics at Harris Corporation in

Rochester, NY. He has served in many leadership roles entailing research, project management, and business development in the optical sciences with a concentration in precision optical fabrication, testing, and design. He was selected for 2012 Aviation Week & Space Technology 40 Under 40 due to his significant contribution to the industry. He has also been very active in national optical societies including OSA and SPIE and has served as the 2005-06 President and 2004-2005 Vice President of the Huntsville Electro-Optical Society (HEOS) and is serving on many technical conference committees. Ted earned his PhD in Optical Science and Engineering from the University of Alabama in Huntsville where he also earned a master’s in physics. He received his bachelor’s degree in physics with a mathematics minor from the University of Tennessee.
