Next-Generation Photovoltaics

Abstract  Next-Generation Photovoltaics (PV) encompasses a broad area of solar cell research including high efficiency III-V materials, organic semiconducting materials and various types of nanomaterials. The underlying thrust of the third-generation approach is production of PV systems with low cost per Watt through use of either high-efficiency or low-cost materials. There has recently been renewed interest in use of III-V material systems for the receiver end of high concentration photovoltaic (CPV) systems.

Current work at the NanoPower Research Laboratory at RIT focuses on design and growth of high efficiency III-V material systems for both CPV and extra-terrestrial (space power) application. Specifically, we are looking at incorporation of quantum dots and wells within III-V solar cells to provide higher efficiency, more favorable temperature coefficients and less sensitivity to changes in spectral distribution. This talk will give an overview of third-generation PV research at RIT, a discussion of the CPV and nanomaterials approach and specific results using nanomaterials in III-V PV design.

Biography  Seth Hubbard received his Ph.D. from the University of Michigan Ann Arbor in 2005 and is currently an Assistant Professor of Physics and Microsystems Engineering at the Rochester Institute of Technology. Dr. Hubbard currently leads the NanoPower Research Laboratory’s PV team, working on the epitaxial growth, fabrication and characterization of nanostructured solar photovoltaic devices. Prior to RIT, Dr. Hubbard was a National Research Council Postdoctoral Research Associate at NASA Glenn Research Center. Dr. Hubbard also serves as an Associate Editor of the IEEE Journal of Photovoltaics and the Publications Chair of the 38th IEEE Photovoltaics Specialist Conference.
