Quantum Entanglement and What It Can Do For You

Abstract

I will give an introductory talk on the notion of quantum entanglement and some of its applications to quantum information science from the point of view of quantum optics, where the photon is of fundamental concern. I’ll begin with a discussion of quantum interference effects involving only one photon at a time and where entanglement is involved right at the beginning. I’ll then extend the discussion to situations involving two photons in which so-called multi-photon interference efforts can occur, such as the famous Hong-Ou-Mandel effect. I’ll explain why the term 'multi-photon interference' is a misnomer as photons do not, in fact, interfere. Finally I’ll discuss applications of entanglement to quantum state teleportation, quantum cryptography, and quantum metrology using quantum states of light.


About the speaker

I received my Ph.D. from SUNY-Albany in 1979. I’ve had positions at Seton Hall University, University of Minnesota, Morris, St. Bonaventure University, Amherst College, and Lehman College, The City University of New York where I’ve been since 1998. My research is mainly in the area of quantum optics, and I have co-authored with Sir Peter Knight, the textbook Introductory Quantum Optics published by Cambridge University Press, 2005.
